Harald Reichert

Project Leader PETRA IV

After 17 years as active researcher in condensed matter physics using synchrotron radiation, Harald Reichert transitioned into facility management taking up the charge as Director of Research for Physical Sciences at the ESRF when the facility embarked on an ambitious upgrade programme in 2009. In the following 13 years, he assumed the scientific lead for the successful transformation of the ESRF into the world’s first high-energy 4th generation light source (ESRF-EBS) with the Upgrade Programme Phase I & II.

In 2022, Harald Reichert was appointed Lead Scientist in the Accelerator Division at DESY and took over leadership for the PETRA IV project, which aims to upgrade the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III into the world’s most brilliant high-energy 4th generation light source.

He is a member of numerous advisory bodies for X-ray science around the world.
