Riccardo Bartolini

PETRA IV accelerator

Riccardo Bartolini joined DESY in April 2020 to take up the position of Lead Scientist and PETRA IV Machine Project Leader. His main research interest is in the field of ultralow emittance ring accelerator physics and technology.

Bartolini graduated from the University of Pisa, Italy, with a thesis on compact free-electron lasers and holds a PhD in physics obtained in 1997 at the University of Bologna and CERN with a thesis on the nonlinear beam dynamics in the LHC at CERN. After working at the ENEA research centre in Frascati, Italy, he moved to the Diamond Light Source, UK, where he became head of the Accelerator Physics Group in 2005. He led the accelerator physics effort during the commissioning of the Diamond booster and storage ring. In 2007, he got a joint appointment with the Physics Department at the University of Oxford. He carried out accelerator physics and free-electron laser research at the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science and Technology.

In 2012, he was nominated Diamond Research Fellow and became Professor of Accelerator Physics in 2014. In 2018, he was appointed Technical Director of the SESAME light source in Jordan, where he finalised the commissioning of the accelerators and started up the user operation of the facility.

Bartolini served in numerous international review committees, research evaluation panels and advisory bodies to funding agencies (in the UK). He was a member of the STFC Project Peer Review Panel (PPRP), the STFC Accelerator Review Panel (ARP), the STFC Accelerator Strategy Board (ASB), the Cockcroft Institute Scientific Advisory Committee, the MICE project board and the Machine Advisory Committees of ANKA at KIT, DESY, SIAM-II (Thailand), HEPS (China), INFN (Italy) and ESRF (France). He chaired the Machine Advisory Committee of the Iranian Light Source Facility and the STFC HL-LHC UK Oversight Committee.
