Christian Stegmann

Director in charge of Astroparticle Physics

Christian Stegmann has been Director in charge of Astroparticle Physics at DESY since 2019 and has headed the DESY site in Zeuthen since 2011. He is also a professor of astroparticle physics at the University of Potsdam and an honorary professor at the Technical University of Dresden. In his role, he is responsible for the strategic development of astroparticle physics at DESY – from gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy to gravitational-wave research and national and international Helmholtz activities.

Christian Stegmann has been active in gamma-ray astronomy for many years. He was spokesperson for the international H.E.S.S. experiment in Namibia and is one of the co-initiators of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). He is also one of the initiators of the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) and is currently coordinating site investigations in Lusatia, Saxony, for the Einstein Telescope, the planned European gravitational-wave observatory. Before his appointment in Zeuthen, he taught and conducted research at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
