Joachim Mnich

Particle physics

Joachim Mnich is Lead Scientist at DESY and Professor of Physics at the University of Hamburg. He worked on experiments at DESYs PETRA storage ring as a doctoral student before moving to CERN in Switzerland for several years. He joined DESY as Lead Scientist in 2005. Here, he headed the DESY CMS group and coordinated the European EUDET detector R&D programme before being appointed DESY Director in charge of Particle and Astroparticle Physics in 2009. Joachim Mnich held this post for 12 years. He has been Director for Research and Computing at CERN since January 2021.

Joachim Mnichs scientific focus is on the study of elementary particles and their properties, the planning and development of new detectors, physics analysis at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the preparation of a new electron–positron linear collider.
